2. Introduction - Literature Reviews and the Research Question
Hello! Welcome to the EDT 8240 Digital Scholarship of Teaching: Literature Review. This course involves the selection of a research topic relevant to educational technology, using a coding form to help systematically organize research articles and patterns, in-depth review of articles with topics relevant to the research question, and drafting a literature review in three constructive phases.
The purpose of a literature review is to help researchers make a connection between a proposed study and prior research on the same or similar topic (Mertler, 2016). Literature reviews are examinations of knowledge and information relevant to a specific research topic (Mertler, 2016). Sources for reviews used in this course included peer reviewed journal articles and subject textbooks. Conducting a systematic review of research benefits researchers as they examine and investigate their research question (Mertler, 2016).
A literature review can help identify a topic, narrow focus, develop a research plan, and provide other information regarding the overall research project (Mertler, 2016). A sound review may result in a revised approach to a research study to avoid replicating previous research (Mertler, 2016).
The research question for my study involves the use of seductive details in multimedia presentations. Seductive details are the addition of interesting text or images in multimedia presentations that have no relevance to the overall instructional message. My literature review specifically focuses on: The influence of seductive details in multimedia presentations on extraneous cognitive processing.

3. The Use of Coding Forms in Literature Reviews
A challenge to writing a literature review is keeping thoughts, notes, and content organized. A coding form is one tool that can help organize this information (Schroeder, 2018). A coding form is used to organize studies relevant to a literature review, and provides a summary overview of each research article (Schroeder, 2018).
The coding form used for this course included columns for the research article title, the study abstract, theoretical framework driving the study, research methods used (quantitative/qualitative/mixed methods), measures used in the research, the reliability and validity of the study, the research findings, a personal critique of the study, and a “bigger picture” section that could be used to include notes on how that particular study would fit in the overall scheme of the literature review (Schroeder, 2018).
Please select the Microsoft Excel document below to view an example of the coding form template used for this literature review.

4. Elements of a Good Literature Review
A good literature review summarizes research around a specific topic. It highlights benefits and pitfalls of the research, synthesis results across studies, and creates a compelling argument (Schroeder, 2018).
A good literature review includes three key components (Schroeder, 2018). These components include the theoretical foundation of the study, empirical evidence, and synthesis of previous research into patterns (Schroeder, 2018). A good literature review includes a strong theoretical background (Schroeder, 2018).
Theory is important because it helps us understand why something happens (Schroeder, 2018). Theory-guided work can also help us understand how people learn (Schroeder, 2018). The theory section of a literature review typically follows a pattern that includes the definition of the theory, an explanation of the theory, and application of the theory (Schroeder, 2018).
Evidence includes presenting results that are convincing, reliable, generalizable, and provide sufficient empirical evidence (Schroeder, 2018).
Synthesis involves findings patterns in the data and tying this evidence together within the structure of the paper (Schroeder, 2018). The goal of synthesis is to build an argument that supports a research position and draws one good final research conclusion (Schroeder, 2018).
